  • Design, simulation, optimization, CAD modeling and implementation of a 56-channel transmit coil for 7T MRI: this is a major complex project which involves electrical, mechanical, and RF engineering developments and aims to develop an RF head coil with unprecedent performance at 7T.
  • Pre-processing, post-processing, and quantification of MRI images: development of pipelines for hippocampal subfields segmentation, diffusion MRI processing, QSM, fMRI, image denoising, bias correction, distortion correction, parcellation.
  • Support for in-vivo MRI studies: optimization of MRI sequences and procedures, definition of the MR sequences required for patient studies, taking into account the characteristics of each study.

Graduate Student Researcher, University of Pittsburgh (Aug 2014 - Dec 2019)

  • Dissertation entitled "Advances in radiofrequency coil developments for 7 Tesla human MRI"
  • Developed and simulated innovative designs of radio-frequency (RF) antennas for 7 Tesla (7T) MRI using an in-house developed/maintained finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) software.
  • Validated simulations by conducting temperature tests to determine the safe power limits when using the MRI antennas in humans.
  • Developed a MATLAB software for nonlinear optimization of multi-channel RF antenna arrays' excitation ports to achieve maximum homogeneity and efficiency of the magnetic field produced and to reduce the levels of power deposition in the tissues.
  • Implemented and managed the implementation of several RF antenna designs for imaging different parts of the body, including head, body, arm/hand, knee, foot, and breast.
  • Conducted several clinical studies at the University of Pittsburgh, including late-life diseases, schizophrenia, sickle cells disease, small vessels disease, multiple sclerosis, and depression (total more than 500 patients).
  • Developed an innovative image filtering technique and pipelines for diffusion tensor image (DTI), functional MRI, and structural MRI post-processing.
  • Acquired images and optimized protocols for ex-vivo animal and human scans at 7T MRI.

Graduate Student Researcher, University of Sao Paulo (Jul 2012 - Jul 2014)

  • Thesis entitled "Application analysis and design of active circulators for continuous-wave Doppler ultrasound systems."
  • Designed a load-insensitive high-bandwidth active circulator for continuous-wave Doppler ultrasound.
  • Contributed to the upgrade of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, developing alternatives for the current hardware.
  • Developed hardware/software/firmware and graphical interface for acquisition of electrical signals from neurons of small insects.

Undergraduate Student Researcher, University of Sao Paulo (Feb 2006 - Dec 2010)

  • Project entitled "Pulse oximeter with USB communication."

Industry Experience

Research and Development Engineer, i-Healthsys Medical Products (Jan 2011 - Jul 2014)

  • Development of hardware, firmware, and software for medical and veterinary devices; mechanical prototyping; project management; coordination of staff development; grant writing; search for suppliers and investors
  • Developed a high-resolution, low-noise, and electrically isolated electrocardiograph (ECG), including the hardware, firmware, and graphical interface.
  • Developed a radial tonometer with sphygmomanometer calibration option. This equipment is able to noninvasively measure blood pressure in real time (beat-to-beat).
  • Integrated the ECG, tonometer, sphygmomanometer, and pulse oximeter devices, with a stand-alone computer and graphical interface, resulting in the tilt-table test equipment. This equipment has passed in the clinical trials and is in the certification phase.
  • Developed and tested an optical milk flow meter.
  • Developed a hand hygiene monitor, currently patent-protected and commercially available, that uses radio-frequency (RF) signals to detect the presence of a health care professional in the hospital ward and evaluate if one has performed the hand hygiene before approaching the patient.
  • Developed a remote monitoring system to acquire physiological signals from patients - such as ECG, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, and temperature - and send the information remotely to a health care center. It is also able to give instructions to the patients or caregiver, such as medication schedules
  • Designed hardware for medical and veterinary devices; data acquisition, real-time processing, and presentation using MATLAB and LabVIEW; microcontroller programming using C and Assembly languages.

Electrical Engineering Intern, I-Healthsys Medical Products (Jan 2010 - Dec 2010)
